Buffer Duty

Taken in the Engineer Barracks, Aartal Kaserne, Herborn-Seelbach, (then) West Germany, in either 1982 or 1983.
It was obviously way too early in the morning for exposure to flash bulbs.
Remember flash bulbs?

Was AR 670-1 suspended back then?

@JSM,

These were still the post-Vietnam Era days, at the beginning of the Reagan build-up. Grooming standards were essentially the same, but the norm (even in uniform) was for longer hair than is common today.

Other factors would include:

a. This was a "remote" site. No on-post barber. No much of anything, for that matter.

b. It was Germany. Longer/thicker hair is not contraindicated during the Winter months.

I was also thinking about the antiterrorist measures in USAREUR the 80's that included allowing shaggier hair, so that American soldiers would not stick out as much off-duty in the ville.

Plus it seemed odd that you guys would be 'military' enough to buff the floors, yet not enough to get high 'n' tights...

@anon,

Like I said, no barber. So maintaining a high-and-tight. . . . not so much. And no PX at which to buy your own barber gear. Really, I don't remember seeing very many high-and-tights in the early 1980's, at least not in Germany.

This was even a combat arms unit; but it was also one which was essentially embedded with the German army, whose grooming standards were even more relaxed than ours.

And of course we buffed our floors, it was a barracks!
