A Christmas Day 2009 incident in which a suspected terrorist allegedly tried to blow up a plane just before it landed in Detroit led to so-called increased security at airports and aboard aeroplanes, especially those flying to and from the United States. Measures include more searches of passengers, less carry-on luggage, and passengers not allowed to leave their seats, even to use the restroom, during the final 60 minutes of flight. One British news agency called the new situation "flying jails". That designation seems euphemistic, because in reality since 9/11 international travel has become a puppet show of harassment by government-controlled workers - only those being manipulated are not stickmen, but people.

Dear Editor,
It was quite refreshing to read Mervin Stoddart's article, "No to Dudus extradition, no to US demands", which was posted on the Online Jamaica Observer on April 21. The arguments he presented are unique in that most Jamaicans aren't knowledgeable of US history so his arguments may go contrary to conventional wisdom. As he has correctly stated, most have been duped by American propaganda. I have met a few myself. While I do agree with Stoddart's sentiments, I have to question whether Mr Golding would have stood up for the regular Jamaican in the same manner as he did for Mr Coke. After all, Jamaica has extradited people to the US since Mr Golding came to power.

Dear Editor,
Common sense, tradition and common law suggest that every suspect is innocent until proved guilty and that extensive media ranting often erodes the possibility of a fair trial in criminal cases. Hence, the media campaign being waged by a certain Jamaican media house for the handing over of Christopher "Dudus" Coke to United States authorities in response to an extradition warrant is disgraceful. In the Michael Manley era that same medium promoted reactionary, anti-Jamaican, pro-American sentiments to turn back the democratic socialist agenda of the PNP which gave ordinary Jamaicans emancipation from mental slavery but which was undermined en route to winning economic freedom for all Jamaicans, not just the elites above Liguanea.
You can always count on some solid anti-American sentiment from the Reverand Stoddart.
Liguanea, by the way, is the part of Kingston where the new U.S. Embassy was sited. You can expect that most Jamaican readers, particularly visa holders, will get the reference.

One of the most intriguing studies that could ever be conducted concerns the movement of peoples from continent to continent and from country to country over the past millennia. Starting with the current commonly held academic findings about the origin of Homo sapiens sapiens, it can be said that modern humans began in Africa, spread over the so-called Middle East (preferably North Africa), continued throughout Asia, and eventually reached the other continents.
