JAMAICANS TRAVELLING to the United States of America (US) are concerned about the recent non-immigrant visa revocations of at least one prominent businessman and five entertainers, but are scared to comment openly about it.

Read the whole article here.

Snippet(s):

"Although the response was unsolicited, at least one Jamaican with a stern face made it known that she would not touch the issue with a 10-foot pole. Others, fearing possible repercussions, were not willing to speak on record.

Visa holders, it is reported, are not aware that their visa has been cancelled until they arrive at the airline check-in desk at the airport. Our news team captured the mood of travellers to the US at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston on Thursday."

"The baptised New Yorker is among a number of Jamaicans who think the revocations are linked to the extradition tussle between the US and Jamaica involving alleged drug kingpin, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. She is of the view that if the visa revocations are part of a broader punishment package crafted by the US to get Jamaica to extradite the man known in the streets as the 'president', then they are excessive."

&

"She opined that the government of her adopted homeland was being unfair because it is said that the 'president' has never travelled to America. However, under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty that deals with extradition, travelling to the requesting state is not a prerequisite for a prima facie case to be made out against an individual and a subsequent extradition request sent."

Sex shop invasion - Communities appeal to authorities; practice devalues properties

published: Sunday June 29, 2008

RESIDENTS IN a number of upper St Andrew neighbourhoods have been seeking the urgent assistance of the police to shut down several sex shops that have invaded their communities, "carrying property values down".

Read the whole article here.

Snippet(s):

"Assistant Superintendent of Police Wayne Cameron of the St Andrew Central police confirms that massage parlours or sex shops, are on the rise in the Corporate Area and that the police is currently investigating a number of them."

"(T)hese "houses of pleasure" are ensconced in high-end residential areas and it's not easy to single them out.

According to the police, operators of massage parlours have been shelling out hefty sums to rent or lease these homes."

&

"A source from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) says massage parlours are - on the face it - legitimate business ventures for which one can be granted a licence to operate in a residential area.

However, the CCN source points out that if transactions, including sex in exchange for money is proven, operators could be charged with aiding and abetting prostitution which is illegal in Jamaica.

Those who operate without licences are fined according to the discretion of judges in local courts, with higher fines for habitual offenders."

Air Jamaica needs to explain Miami route cut

Thursday, January 29, 2009

We have to believe that the decision by Air Jamaica, the national airline, to drop its Miami route, among others, was based on very strong financial reasons.

Read the whole article here.

Snippet(s):

"Over time, Miami became the heart and soul of Air Jamaica. For convenience, it is hard to beat. Jamaicans needing to do business and shopping in Miami, a little over an hour away, and return home the same day, depended on those flights."

&

"Miami has become for Jamaicans, "Kingston 21", a virtual extension of Kingston and St Andrew, because of the many nationals living in Florida and the heavy traffic between the two gateways."

&

"While murders were down, robberies and rape had increased in the community, the agency says, and according to some police officers, Grants Pen had got out of control.

Subsequent to PERF's termination, USAID says Management Systems International (MSI) was contracted to seek out, sustain and replicate successful elements of the project under a new initiative, the Community Empowerment and Transformation (COMET) project."
