re: "Japanese Heavy Equipment Company Leaves Iran Over 'Crane Hangings' "

El Cid at Big Peace reported on an intersection of two shame cultures with a guilt culture.

Money quote(s):

"A Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer said it has cut business ties with the Iranian government following a report that its cranes have been used for public executions."

Hard to believe nobody at any of these crane manufacturers ever noticed any pictures of cranes in the media of one of the custumers. After all, who could possibly ever recognize their own product being prominently displayed.

"United Against Nuclear Iran published on its website a list of seven international manufacturers exporting cranes and other heavy equipment to Iran, along with pictures of the cranes being used for public executions.

Crane-hanging has become a common in the Islamic Republic. According to the op-ed, “Amnesty International estimates that as many as 13 people had been hanged in public by the end of April, compared to a total 14 in all of 2010. In a number of instances, those executed have been left hanging high in the air on construction cranes for all to see.”"

Still, whatever the delay, whatever the motivator that stops future imports of foreign cranes, let Iran build its own cranes for this purpose, if it can.

Now, about all that nuclear technology....

Get drastic, PSOJ, activate the gallows!

published: Sunday July 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am pleased to see the response of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), in offering a tidy sum (could be more) to assist our beleaguered police force in its efforts. However, the headlines mentioned 'Drastic crime plan'. To my mind, that is not drastic. Where are the drastic sanctions that should be a part of this thrust?

Snippet(s):

"We have always put the human rights of these perpetrators first and foremost, and our present situation is the result.

What about the human rights of those slain?

We have repeatedly put forward many reasons why we should dispense with capital punishment in the form of hanging. Is this not a part of the system of justice?

We want justice now for the families of the victims of murder. That justice is they must pay with their lives, and not be nurtured and fed with the tax dollars of us all."

Hung up on hanging

Off with their heads! Hang them from the highest tree! This hanging debate in Parliament as regards the death penalty is an emotive issue, but we cannot seem to find a consensus. Indeed, it is a hung jury. A few weeks ago, men of the cloth jumped the gun and attempted unsuccessfully to point to a biblical justification for killing in the name of the State. Unlike the Church's stance on sexuality, this has created a split in the middle and because of a few overzealous pastors, there is no united front. But that is not where the honest discussion must 'lie.' As far as the teachings of the Bible are concerned, this is a matter for the laws of man.
