Trust me, even consular officers do not exist to drum up tourism, even when we're in tourism-worthy locales.
Occasionally, we even draw a certain amount of criticism from those whose function it _is_ to drum up tourism, mainly when we insist on publishing travel warnings and such so that U.S. visitors are forewarned.
Dear CAA - How diplomatic of you to not mention the amount of criticism we receive for not acting as full-time tour guides in those few bikini-worthy sites! Madam recalls vividly, although it was many years ago, the Amcit visitor who asked about the best restaurants, the cleanest hotels, and the cheapest rental cars. On receiving apparently insufficient advice, said Amcit asked, with feigned tolerance, "Well, why are you here, then?" And Madam did NOT reply "To visit you in jail when you finally insult the locals enough to be arrested."
A weblog by a former soldier and present-day U.S. foreign service officer. My views in no way represent anyone else's than my own although readers are welcome to agree with as much as they desire. If you're looking for gossip, for breaches of operational security or privacy, for public criticism of the declared foreign policies of the United States of America, leaks or other treasonous disloyalty, the reader is invited to look elsewhere.

Glancing at the 'top 10', it seems that FSOs exist to drum up tourism.
You have to admit, your commentary isn't really bikini-worthy.

Sniff-sniff . . . he said nasty things about me, too!
Sometimes, in life, there will be people not nearly as impressed with us as we are ourselves.
