Nikolas at The (Ex) Washington Realist ("The blog of Nikolas Gvosdev--thoughts on U.S. foreign policy and world affairs--as observed from Newport, RI") touches on priorities amongst U.S. military commitments overseas.
Money quote(s):
"Secretary Gates and others talk about balance, about setting priorities--and yet, the policy process still ends up making everything a priority. I remember at a magazine event a few years back where a speaker was asked whether he could prioritize the countries where the U.S. has a military presence--and he said that they were all important (some 144 countries!)."
I commented:
"Everything is, in fact, a priority.The key is to prioritize, to judge the weight of the competing priorities and assign available resources accordingly."

Exactly. And what is happening now is that prioritization is forced upon us by the economic condition of the country, so that choices are being driven by external factors as much as by what we consider to be our strategic needs.
